Hi Everyone,
i've been watching this silly banter back and forth between Mark the ERAM guy
and various members of the digest and now i've finally been sucked in by the
ever increasing event horizon if this black hole! Actually, it hasn't affected
me too much, i just hit the page down button just like i'd change the channel
while watching cable..it's like a reflex action!
Whatever each of us may think about him personally or the validity (or lack
thereof) of his product is besides the point. As the old saying goes, "it
takes two to tango". If we all had ignored him from the beginning, or at least
after a few posts, he would have realized no one is interested in talking
about his product. But everyone feels they need to get the last word in. So
it keeps going ad infinitum!
RESIST THE URGE TO COMMENT ABOUT HIM OR HIS PRODUCT...just walk away
And since you guys got me started...some members have complained that this
digest sucks because either their questions aren't answered or aren't answered
in a timely fashion. Others have said that these individuals might have better
luck if they first contribute to this forum instead of looking just for
answers. This is pretty funny actually...the number one reason why most people
have subscribed to this forum is probably because they don't know too much and
they want to find out more...how the hell are they supposed to contribute?
they're here to learn!
Of course people should realize that some questions people don't have the
answers to or don't have the time to answer it. Don't take it personally.
I've posted questions from time to time and have been greeted with a wealth of
info and sometimes none at all. But i know i've learned a hell of a lot by
watching and hopefully will be able to contribute in the future more than i
have been able to in the past.
So i think i need some mandatory BMW content, so...
in the past some members have asked what's the difference between the Euro M3
and why isn't it in the US?
back in '96, BMW released the M3 Evolution in europe...the following is from
Sportcar International april/may 1996 issue
in comment to why the european version of the M3 has different engine as
compared to US, Klaus Schmidt, head of testing for BMW Motorsport explained:
"In the case of the E36 M3, however, the decision to use a different engine in
the US was taken at the boardroom level. While the latest EC emissions
standards are now close to American requirements, the board felt that to keep
the price down in that more competitive market we would still need to develop
a less powerful, less complex engine."
1996 M3 EVOLUTION:
on the EVO model they increased displacement form 2990cc to 3201cc
pistons made lighter
con-rods graphite coated
inlet valves enlarged
compression raised from 10.8 to 11.3:1
second oil pump added
VANOS incorporated onto the exhaust cam as well (previosuly only on the inlet
cam)
(European M3 gets continuously variable valve timing. US gets 2 points of
adjustment)
321hp @ 7400rpm
258 lb-ft @ 3250 rpm
Chassis mods on the EVO
new transverse links
reinforced ball joints
off center strut tops (increase caster)
reinforced spring pans & new axle mounts
Wheelbearings and driveshafts sourced from 850Ci
25% limited slip is M5 piece
M3's proprietary control arms beefed up
recalibrated anti-roll bars
stiffer springs
staggered tire fitment became standard (225/45ZR17 in front, 245/40ZR17 in
rear)
Doors on 2-door coupe are aluminium
6-speed trans
for comparision US spec 3.2L M3 is:
3152cc (euro is 3201cc)
10.5:1 compression (euro is 11.3:1)
240hp @ 6000rpm (euro is 321hp @ 7400rpm)
236 lb-ft @ 3800rpm (euro is 258 @ 3250rpm)
redline is 6500rpm (euro is 7500rpm?)
don't forget euro has individual intake runners and throttle plates!
plus suspension tuning different.

Rukman
