Are Stainless Steel Lines Necessary

No, not necessary but they do give you better pedal feel. They are
generally more prone to failure because of the fitting to hose connections.
If you purchase a set of ss hoses, they should be inspected before each
drivers event or annually for street driven cars. Some of the better sets
have strain reliefs and banjo fitting/hollow bolt connections to the front
calipers to prevent the hoses from hitting front suspension components at
full steering lock.
Even with SS lines, E24/E28/E31 cars with hydraulic boosters will have a
softer pedal than those models with vacuum boosters. Many Mercedes and
Ferrari's also use hydraulic boosters which are better suited to space
restricted engine compartments. SD
