No, not necessary but they do give you better pedal feel. They are
generally more prone to failure because of the fitting to hose connections.
If you purchase a set of ss hoses, they should be inspected before each
drivers event or annually for street driven cars. Some of the better sets
have strain reliefs and banjo fitting/hollow bolt connections to the front
calipers to prevent the hoses from hitting front suspension components at
full steering lock.
Even with SS lines, E24/E28/E31 cars with hydraulic boosters will have a
softer pedal than those models with vacuum boosters. Many Mercedes and
Ferrari's also use hydraulic boosters which are better suited to space
restricted engine compartments. SD
