E28 OBC

The computer in my 84 528e isn't working.  When the car is on it flashes red,
but none of the functions work.  I thought it had something to do with the ni-
cad batteries, but I was recently informed they have nothing to do with each
other.  Any suggestions on what might cause this?  How does the key pad come
out?  Does it just pop out?  Do I need to take it out to fix it?
