<E36> O2 sensor troubles?

For all you E36, fuel injection specialists and engine management
technicians I have a question.
What would be the 'typical' symptoms of an O2 exhaust sensor going duff? I
have an E36 325i which has a passion for lurching / surging down the road
when cruising and generally seems 'flat' when accelerating hard. It will
pull cleanly up to about 4000 rpm and then it's as though somebody retards
the ignition by 10 degrees i.e the engine goes flat. This is until 5000 rpm
when it picks up again and pulls to the red-line. Could it be a dodgy O2
sensor? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Help me please, it's driving me
up the wall to the point I have considered selling it, and I have only had
it three weeks!

Thanks
Sean
