E-30 Shield???

I looking to buy a E30 325i,  I used to have an '86 and I last night I found
a very nice '90 but it had a metal shield that extended from behind the oil
pan to the end of the tranny.   


I have never seen this before on an '90   E30,  is this thing stock?   If it
isn't then what could it possibly be used for?
