I believe that 5000 figure came from the first *calendar* year of E36 M3
sales. As you recall that was 1994. After the first 5000 there was still
a full 12 months of _production_ to go. And those later '95s were being
sold well into '96 until the often denied '96 3.2L M3 was released, for
roughly three months of production only.
I'm always willing to stand corrected.
