Peter, many drivers school participants / instructors prefer open face
helmets for communication reasons. Personally, I like my face, so I wear a
full face helmet.
I use the same helmet for my motorcycle and for my autocrossing. It is a
Shoei RF series which is Snell 95 rated. Snell is a safety standard that far
outweighs government standards, and I believe it is a required standard for
any sort of competition.
Shoei has protected my head in several motorcycling "incidents", including
the time I fell asleep at 80+ mph.
