Don't know if we're talking about the exact same rattle, but I've
found the steering shafts to have a rattle around the u-joint. I'm
not sure if it's supposed to do that or not. My old E21 did it, and
then I found my new (to me) E30 doing the exact same thing at only 4
years old. I could make the noise by grabbing the u-joint and
wiggling it. The little bit of play down there transmits the noise
right up the shaft into the cabin.
I notice it every friggin' time I ride over the nearby railroad
tracks that don't carry trains anymore, but are left in the road
anyway, getting rougher, and rougher, and rougher...

John - I have the same problem with my E28. The U-joint is worn/loose,
which accounts for the play in the steering wheel. Best to check this prior
to attacking the box. Question is: can the joint be changed without
a)removing steering box ; and/or b) pulling up steering column. Anyone done
one of these in an E28?
George
