What you're describing is called "Tramlining". It occurred on my car in
a huge way when I had the DumbFlop D40M2s in 235/45 17. The problem
went away completely when I switched to Pirelli P7000 in the same size.
The Pirellis had the added benefit of retaining the Z rating while also
adding all-season capability (or at least rating which'll keep me from
getting a ticket if I get stuck in Northern VA).
Some folks have found the DumbFlops to tramline _less_ than other tires
so I suspect there is some issue with the geometry of the car's front
end.
I love my Pirelli P7000s. They pump water like a fire truck in the rain
and have some very user friendly break-away characteristics in both wet
or dry. They're also considerably quieter than the DumbFlops.
