Car overheated, help!!

This afternoon, while on my commute back home from school, my car
overheated while waiting at a stoplight.  The red battery indicator came
on and then I noticed some smoke coming out under the hood.
Subsequently, power steering was also lost.  My first thought was that
the water pump failed.  My car has about 64,000 miles and I remember
reading something about waterpump failure in E36 cars around that
mileage.  What else could be the problem?  Thanks in advance for any
