<e36> Overheating

Our 92 325 started to overheat slightly during last week or
so.
(the needle travels anywhere between 1/2 - 3/4. Close to
1/2 when the car is moving and close to 3/4 when stopped at
the light. Never really reached 3/4 or beyond)
The water pump with new metal impeller has been replaced
less than a year ago as well as new radiator and thermostat.
I suspect:
1) Fan clutch (when it kicks in - howling - the temp seems
to go down a little)
2) Thermostat (sometimes they last 10 years , sometimes 10
months)
Planning on replacing the thermostat first, if that does not
cure it, new clutch is standing by to go in.
Any other words of wisdom from fellow digesters?
TIA.
Milos
