e30 engine rebuild/replacement

I own a 1987 325is with 172k miles.

Sometime in the near future I would like to replace the engine with 
either a rebuild or a new one.

Has anyone gone through this process before?  Is it worth it?

What are some reputible companies who rebuild engines (ie Bavarian Motor 
Exchange) or build new ones (ie Metric Mechanic).  

What are the advantages of buying a new engine vs. rebuild and vice 
versa?

What kind of money are we talking about here anyway?
