95 740i headlight question

Someone at work caught a rock in the headlight with his 7 which broke
the clear plastic cover.  Now he has to replace the unit.  How do you
remove and replace the assembly?  Also, how can reduce the cost of such
an incident in the future?  Is there just a replacement clear lens (The
dealership sold him the whole assembly), add-on cover, etc.?
