Had one other digester try the clutch in "solution" to the rattling M42
underhood noise. He too, determined that the rattle disappeared when the
clutch was in, but was evident with the clutch out. Conclusion is it seems
to be more of an annoyance at this time, than an impending doom.
I also received the following text from a digester (Andrew) who had
previously reported a similar issue with his E30. I usually dont reprint
personal emails, but it's harmless, and I have not divulged his last name or
email address:

Actually I concluded that it is the result of gear slap when the clutch
is engaged (i.e not depressed) while the trans is in neutral. All the
gears are then unloaded and spinning and my rattling noise is the
result. This occurred after taking out BMW gearbox oil for redline
MTL. I drained the MTL and used redline's heavier MT90 which dampened
the sound some but it is still noticable.
