<e28> cruise control

After 198K miles of flawless performance, the cruise control on my 
'85 528e has (almost) quit functioning.

Now it engages once per engine start, then cannot be engaged 
again until the engine is restarted (at least that is what I think the 
pattern is; I know I can engage it once on a trip, but not more than 
once, then I forget about it until the next time I'm on the highway, 
when the same thing happens).

I have not yet begun to try to troubleshoot, and wonder if anyone 
has suggestions as to what I should look for, given this unusual 
behavior.
