I had the same noise once. It would come and go. Usually, I could
swerve the car back and forth and get it to stop. Occasionally, that
didn't work and I would have to stop the car, back up for a few feet,
then motor on without the noise. I decided it was just a rock/pebble
rubbing on the drive shaft.
When I was getting my rear Dinan sway bar put in (you need a lift), the
exhaust was lowered. I had my mechanic remove the heat shield and a few
rocks came out.
Haven't heard the noise since...
