The Widow-Maker

Hi BMW people,
I have a quick quiz that I'm sure will get a variety of responses.  I am
looking to buy a 323i.  I've done alot of talking and reading (but not much
driving yet) and I have come up with the impression that the E21 323i has
horrendous handling, almost on a Chevette/Spitfire level and has been
reffered to by some as "The Widow-Maker".  Conversely the E30 seems to be
widely recommended, the head bolt problem being the only serious but
fixable design fault.
Are these impressions true?
Are there any tried and true suspension upgrades that can be performed to
an E21 to make is handle better?
