The main difference, besides the transmission, is that the 535i has a real
engine, while the 528e has a couple of squirrels running in a rolling cage.
Although, towards the end of the E28 they came out with the "super
eta". So, the difference between the early eta and the "super eta" is that
the early car had anemic squirrels, while the later version had squirrels
that work out with Mark McGuire (but they're still squirrels). If the 528e
in question has 2 tail pipe tips instead of 1, it is the super eta.
If you really like shifting your own gears and want a car that MOVES, I
suggest you pass up both and look for a 5 speed 535i or 535is. You'll
like it a whole lot more than either the eta or the auto.
