The car: 1990 325iX(A), 93xxx miles. Spousal Unit (wife) Driven
Problem: Shimmy upon braking occurring around 55-60 mph, disappearing as
speed drops. Not evident at lower speeds. Manifests primarily as a shake
in the steering wheel.
Took the car in and had the wheels balanced today to remove a slight
imbalance shimmy. Wheels look straight as spun on the machine. Front
brake rotors looked O.K. upon cursory exam. No evident runout. New OE
Jurid pads about two years ago (black wheels to prove it). No need for new
pads based upon pad depth. Rotor surfaces look fine. Imbalance shimmy now
gone after balancing.
Ideas:
Glazing? What does this look like? Since the SU drives the car, it
probably never sees hard braking. Would glazed pads cause this? Do Jurids
glaze?
Thrust bushings? How long do these last on an iX?
Struts? How long do these last on an iX?
Lastly: Lower control arms and ball joints? Hope not! This is expensive.
However, this car is worth any amount it takes when the going get
slippery.
All helpful ideas appreciated. Will summarize and repost for all iX-wads.
TIA,
Bob Duckworth
