E30 fuel pumps

  I've read that the 87 325is was the last E30 to get a transfer pump in
addition to the main fuel pump.  Does this cause many problems with later E30s
by (overburdening)/(tending to clog) the main pump?  Any other downfalls
without a transfer pump?  Is it possible to get creative and put a transfer
pump on an E30 that doesn't have one?  TIA
