Geoff,

As to the scratches on the wood finish of shifter area.  I work for a
retailer and see this quite often.  We remove the panel and use a high
speed buffer on it, just as one would do with scratched paint.  The
conpound is a very light abrasive-liquid.  Be careful not to heat it up
too much.  It will look like new and won't cost $300-$500 dollars.
