[E36] How do you replace Dash Lights for AC/Thermostat?

The knobs on my dash for controlling temperature aren't being lit any
longer, and I wanted to see if there is an easy way of replacing the
lights.  Unfortunately, I can't simply remove each knob and find a small
bulb to replace.  The light source appears to be inside the
AC/thermostat control unit.  (I'm not sure if my terminology is right,
but I think you get the picture.)

Any suggestions?
