OK, so maybe I should have called VR _before_ I posed my previous question
to the digest :)

Anyways, they were happy to fax me information on the programming mode.  If
anyone is interested, you can call V1 and ask for the fax on 'user
programmable features', or send me mail and I'll send the info to you.  I
don't see that anyone has posted this info on the web; if there is enough
interest I could be persuaded to scan or type it...
