Subject: Stock redline on your car...
Lee asks:
>Last night I "sharked" my 88 '635, according to TMS, I can run this thing
up
>to 6,800 rpm now, my question is that knowing that the original redline was
>6250... is this a smart thing to do with 153,400 miles on it? Is this not
>considered abuse? Oil leaks blown heads... etc.. I would be pretty upset if
>I blew the thing up!
Gee, Lee.. then don't rev it all the way to 6800..
In all reality, the only way you would "blow the thing up" is with a missed
shift or a mechanical weakness in the engine.. neither of which have
anything
to do with the chip.
The same motor in the 5 series has a stock rev limit of 6450, and we have
countless motors running 6800 with no problems
Of course, with what I see as a predisposition towards thinking the chip is
"abuse" I would have advised you to leave the car stock, rather than think
it's responsible for "oil leaks" on a vehicle with 153+k miles!

Jim, IMHO you have read waaaaay too much into Lee's post man. Nowhere does
he say "this chip is abuse" or " this chip may cause an oil leak". He goes
on to say"... I would be pretty upset if I blew the thing up!". The keyword
here being "I". He did not say "I would be pretty upset if the CHIP blew the
thing up!". He just asked a legitimate question which unfortunately
elicited a "sharp" response from you :(
Lee, Just use common sense. Obviously, the more you run at redline the
harder it is on the engine. What is considered "abuse" is purely subjective.
You will **probably** find the car start to lose its aggressive pull short
of redline necessitating a shift anyway. So, just enjoy your car's
increased performance and driveability...drive hard...be sensible and most
of all HAVE FUN!
