Flat vs. V type engines

My understanding is a flat (or opposed) configuration engine has separate
rod journals [sic] for each piston wheras the "v" configuration has a pair
of pistons attached to a journal. Just trying to remember some of my motor
mechanics from college. Radial engines are the easiest to remember, one
journal for each row of pistons.
