I had this exact problem with both of my E30's.  It is most likely a leaky
fuel line.  The reason you smell it after you shut it off is because there
is still pressure in the lines, forcing the gas out.  You may not be able
to find the hole easily, as it might only leak under pressure and heat, and
even then it just might be gasoline oozing to the surface, rather than
spewing out.  I would recommend replacing all of your fuel lines that look
old, from the gas tank forward.  This is probably a good time to replace
the fuel filter also.  Just make sure you unplug the battery first!
