Coincidentally, I just put a small electronic black box (B&M Shift Plus) in
my GMC truck (4LE auto trans) which increases the speed of the shifts in 2
stages via a dash switch.  It is designed for performance and towing
applications.  The box hooks into the main computer, where apparently the
shift speed is controlled. It does make the shifting less smooth, as you
would expect.  They claim it also reduces transmission temperature under
conditions when frequent shifts are necessary.

Something like this could probably be made for the GM units in BMWs also.
