i remember my first school, years ago.

i had done a lot of driving on high speed TSD rallys, with a lot of dirt. i
was decent at the sideways dirt style of driving -- not great, but decent.
i thought i was a lot better than i really was.

went down to lime rock for a school with my 2.5L V6 Alfa sedan. rode around
with the instructor. it looked like it was pretty straightforward. the
instructor and i switched places, and i quickly discovered a fundamental
truth about my driving -- i sucked.

the thing is, that even if you're an above average driver, being an above
average driver in the US is nothing to be proud of. even being in the top
10% of drivers in the US isn't something to run around telling people
about. as a general rule, we do an absolutely, positively rotten job of
teaching driving and learning to drive in the United States.

it was time consuming and expensive to remedy my "driving problem", but it
was also enormous fun, and well worth the investment.

cheers,
  richard
