In a word, oiling. Your engine has a mechanical oil pump, and the
pressure is related to engine speed. Above a certain point, it
levels off because you don't need or want 100psi of oil in there.
But you do want a certain minimum value for the engine to be
under load (i.e., pulling the car along), and you don't get it
at idle speed.
Or that's what I heard, anyway. :)
But to phrase it a different way, why *would* you want to lug the
engine? It makes your passengers think you don't know how to drive
a stick.
