Muffled Sound from CD Player

My aftermarket stereo has developed a muffled sound when playing CD's.
It sounds like a record player with a piece of lint on the needle.  It
occurs on all 6 of the discs in the changer.  I've pulled it apart but
couldn't see anything obviously wrong.  The tuner and cassette player
sound fine.

Any thoughts?
