Strut Brace. What are the drawbacks?

I have a friend with a strut brace in his Porsche 944 and he claims little
advantage if it is not tied in to the firewall or something as well.  A
digester mentioned this a being a good mod. for a convertible. 

I wondered if there are any drawbacks to the strut brace - besides price,
that is.
