Don, I would think that you might have a worn wheel bearing.
I had a similar problem on my '86 325 and it seemed to have
a rear end growl with a humming sound that seemed to
come from one of the front wheels. I took it to the mech. and
he told me my front right wheel bearing was gone. I got it fixed
for $160, I'd say a bargain price and now the "grinding" sound
is gone and the car seems to run a little smoother and a whole
lot quieter. There's a site you might want to look at for the front
