Loose trim under seats, E36 M3

Hi,

My '98 M3/4 has a piece of black plastic underneath each front seat that
keeps coming loose.  They are flat, relatively thin, and sit just
underneath the lower back edge of the seats and are prone to rear
passengers catching them on their shoes.  I wish I could be more
descriptive, but my vocabulary skills seem to be deserting me. :-)

Does anyone know what these pieces are for and/or how to keep them from
coming loose?  I've had reports from rear passengers feeling air
conditioning coming from under the seats - I've never heard of this
feature, but if that's true I'm guessing that these pieces might have
something to do with that.  Call me (or my back-seat riding friends)
crazy. :-)
