air box?

hey guys-

I was wondering if there was any way to modify the factory airbox to perform
better.
     I heard somewhere that you can remove the inner baffle, to get some extra
air in.
Is this true? 
     Is it also worthwhile to remove the outer snorkel, or will it just suck
the hot air in from the engine compartment. 
     I already received opinions than installing a drop in K&N filter is
basically a waste of $40.
