e28 Short Shift install

i am about ready to install a Auto Solutions short shift kit. my question is
what do i have to remove to get to the shifter/selctor rod etc? Bentley says
removal of the exhaust, heat shield and driveshaft may be necessary. Is all
this really necessary?
