Alarm Control Trimmers ?? (E34 + E30)

     Can anyone tell me the function of the variable reistor trimmers on 
     the alarm control box ? 
     
     The ones unualy fitted under the back set of E34 and E30 motors.
     I think the pots are marked P1 and P2 and have dust protector ove the 
     access holes.
     
     Should the little aerial wire be left strapped up too ?
