Invisibility of aftermarket chip

I'll be getting a chip for my '98 540 very soon.  The following question is
for all the chipped BMWers out there:

- -  Is your chip invisible to the dealer's diagnostic scan?
- -  Aside the performance gain, what are the side effects if any?
