Re: Towing e36 cars on a trailer.



Henry,

A generalized rule for strapping down any car onto a trailer is that the suspension arms and NOT the frame or body need to be strapped down.  The suspension should be free to move because the center of gravity of the trailer is effected by the method used to tie down the vehicle. The transmission must be in neutral to prevent fore and aft movement that can cause cylinder wear or piston ring damage from the engine rocking back and forth during the tow.  Four tie downs should be used crossing them both on the front and the rear.  Obtain some padded "d" rings that can be wrapped around the lower control arms in the front and the semi-trailing arms on the rear to protect the suspension arms.  Tire tie downs can be used that ratchet the tire assembly securly down to the trailer floor as an alternative.   Check the tie downs regularly for tightness during the journey.
