Gary Dietz asked about the canister on the heater hose at the firewall.
That is the heater valve, wich is vacuum controlled, so any leak can throw
the rest of the vacuum servos off kilter.
The visible portion of the valve is easy to approach, but looks will fool
you as there is a upper section to the heater hose, which resides between
the two firewalls. This is neatly hidden beneath the corroded sheetmetal
under the windshield wiper grilles.
Extreme Care should be taken with the vacuum lines between the firewalls.
The plastic junctions are very brittle, especially the "T" fitting to the
"frog-eggs".
If you choose to replace the upper heater hose while you're in there,
remember that the pipe to the heater core is very thin aluminum and be
gentle with the hose clamps, or you'll be back replacing the pipe.
