Gauge Problems 88' 535is

Hi folks, just learned of this list as my 88' 535is is developing a few
electrical quirks.

The patient is a 1988 535is, 100,000 mi.

An inoperative vacuum gauge and premature "Oil Service" warning led to the
replacement of a printed circuit board assembly in the dash. Replacing the
board fixed the problem, but, led to an inoperative temp gauge. The
diagnostics led to the temp sensor which has been replaced, to no avail.

The mechanic, much to his good reputation, has agreed to make good on all,
but, is a bit confused by the symptoms, even with his 20 year's experience
on Bimmers. I will add to this that the "Service Indicator" lamp is always
lit within a couple of hundred miles of a reset (I'm aware of the battery
issues).

The questions:

The mechanic is prepared to replace the PCB again and a new gauge. Anyone
want to take any bets or offer any suggestions prior to install?

Is there any possibility that the batteries exacerbated the problem and
should be replaced? (I've been ignoring the "Service Indicator" for 80,000 mi.)

Thanks in advance from me and me perfectly fine, middle aged BMW.
