In regards to your question.....
The cam gear that you refer to is not variable it is adjustable. The
priciple works like this.....
When you mill your block and head a lot, the cam is then retarded from
where the designer intended the lobes to be. By advancing the cam
timing, you are able to get the correct valve timing.
