Lug bolt appearance

The formerly black lug bolts on my E36 M3 have become flaky and rusty.  I 
realize these are not the most expensive items on the car!  What do the 
rest of you do when this happens?  Replace them?  Is there a way to protect 
them so they don't deteriorate?
