<misc> mindless trivia question

For those of us who haven't been around long enough to know the story and
are idle enough to think about it but too lazy to do the research, can
someone (Phil?) tell us why BMW started at "3" when it went to the three
digit series designation, then skipping "4" to go to "5", "6", "7", and
later "8"? Is it because "1", "2", and "4" were taken by other marques
(whom?) or is it because someone at the top was into some sort of
numerology hokey-pokey?
