Winter Tires

Time for new winter tires for my 87 325es. I've got two Michelin MXV4's (all
seasons) with around 80% tread which are rotting away in my garage. I'm
tempted to get a pair Pirelli Winter 190's for the rear and use the Michelins
on the front. I know four snow tires would be better, but has anyone in the
snow belt had good luck with two all-seasons and two good snows?

As an aside, the best and cheapest trick for winter driving in an E-30 (2wd
anyway) is sand in the trunk. I carry 120-180 lbs in plastic tote bins.
Cheaper and more effective than anything else I've found, plus if you do get
stuck, you've got sand right with you.
