I have the same exact same problem on my '87 325is. The problem is that
the "chrome" strips really aren't chrome. It is a plastic part with some
sort of chrome-like coating that tends to corrode very easily. Replacement
is the easiest and cheapest option. I believe most catalogs (BMP, Bavarain
Autosport, etc) carry them. Since they are plastic they aren't too
expensive. I plan on replacing mine very soon.
