<E30> Fuel Gauge

I was just curious if anyone knows why the fuel gauge on my 1987 325e
acts so strange.  When the fuel level gets really low, like into the
red, sometimes it will drift down below empty and then eventually come
back to the position it was in.  This can be very nerve racking when
you are driving in the middle of nowhere.  I was also wondering if
anyone know how to test if the red fuel light is operational without
running it out of gas.
