Many times the cooling system "symptoms" are just that, symptoms.
Especially when there are multiple symptoms, i.e. thermostat, clogged
radiator, leaking water pump.......etc. You still have to find the
"cause"of the problem. Throwing new parts at an overlaying problem can be
very expensive and frustrating.
The most common cause of cooling system "symptoms" on BMW's is seapage
between combustion chamber and the water jacket at the the headgasket.
This "seapage" is serious as it increases to "leakage", which can
"burrow" an errosive channel into the face of the head which acts as a
focal point for a crack to start during a thermal trauma.
Even if the head doesn't crack, the combustion gas seapage only occurs
about 20% of the running time. The other 80% of the time coolant, which
was super-heated and hyper-pressureized by the combustion gas, is being
"sprayed" into the cylinder(s). This does a nasty "steam-cleaning" of
walls that were oil coated.
Always check for the presence of combustion gas in the radiator if you've
been chasing coolant system symptoms.
