I don't know about the 3 series cars but I installed a keyless entry unit in my
E28 5series after seeing a web page put up by Chris Guy.
The URL is:
http://www.diac.com/~cguy1/bmw/text/keyless.html
I got the keyless unit (black box and 2 transmitters) from J. C. Whitney
(#38BZ2164Y, sale #38CN2164Y), 29.95 on sale, reg. price $39.95. The sale was
supposed to end on 3/31/96, but When I purchased the unit in June I still got it
for $29.95.
I installed the keyless unit in my '82, E28 528e which was not prewired for
this. The black box needs a 12V supply, I tapped into the trunk light for this.
The rest of the instructions are on Chris's web page. The entire installation
took less than half hour. It was very easy, I bought another unit and installed
it in my brother's '83 528e also.
If anyone wants to install this unit and has questions, feel free to e-mail me.
Cheers,
Charles
