Anecdotal note about K&N filters:
my local mechanic says that K&N filters must be scrupulously
cleaned on a regular basis. However, they still admit not
only more air, but more dirt which leads to engine wear. My
mechanic says that he can always tell which engine has been
run with a K&N (at rebuild time). He also says that he hopes
more people use K&N's so his business will remain brisk :-)
Finally, contrary to what was mentioned earlier by Ron Browne,
i've heard that Dinan does use a fan during at least some of
their dyno tests. Mike at Dinan admitted that its probably not
an accurate test because its hard to simulate the real air
flow of a moving car. In any event, it seems that when one's
car is stopped, there is no cool air entering so the Flotech
cannot be getting cooler outside air.
Oh, a while ago, Mike at Dinan mentioned that they don't
routinely advise K&Ns but they do use a K&N in their
supercharge setup.
YMMV, and cone filters should perhaps join the zymolslick50bonamiHandsfreeCell-
