I have an E28 M5 with bunches of stereo stuff done to it, and can mention
a few pointers.
1. Bunches of companys make good plates with nice frequency response. If
you are not running a big amplifier (i.e. if it is stock), consider the
Blaupunkt plates - not only does Blau look good in German cars, they are
the most efficient (db/watt-meter) around. Besides, they cost about $80.
Note that for every 3db of efficiency increase in a speaker, it's the
same as doubling amplifier power.
2. 6x9 will typically not fit in the package tray. This is mostly due to
the fact that the passenger side rear shock tower comes REAL close to the
package tray.
Finally, I think you'll find the spatial sound effects of a good set of
plates on the rear package tray much better than anything you can jam at
the bottom of the rear seat. If you put in plates and want more bass,
look into a small (i.e. 8") sub - you can probably build an enclosure for
such a small beast and place it under the rear seat without having to
plug holes in the car.
Good luck,
